Ultimate Newborn Shopping List

Essential items to add to your newborn shopping list for a comfortable and safe start

As a newborn photographer, I've had the pleasure of working with many new parents and seeing firsthand the excitement and joy that comes with preparing for a new arrival. One of the most important tasks for expecting parents is creating a shopping list of essential items for their newborn. While it can be overwhelming to navigate the endless options available, having a clear list of necessary items can help alleviate some of the stress and ensure new parents are well-prepared for their little one's arrival.

In this blog post, I'll be sharing my ultimate newborn shopping list, complete with everything you need to keep your baby happy, healthy, and comfortable during those precious first few months. Whether you're a first-time parent or a seasoned pro, this list will serve as a helpful guide to ensure you don't miss any important items on your shopping trip.

1. Clothing and accessories

  • Onesies: These are the most basic and essential clothing item for newborns. They come in various sizes, materials, and styles, and are perfect for layering.

  • Hats: Babies can lose a lot of heat through their heads, so it's important to keep them covered with soft and breathable hats.

  • Socks: These keep your baby's feet warm and protected. Choose socks with soft and stretchy materials that won't constrict your baby's movement.

2. Diapering

  • Diapers: Choose between disposable, cloth, or hybrid options. Newborns go through a lot of diapers, so it's important to have enough on hand.

  • Wipes: These are essential for keeping your baby's skin clean and fresh. Choose wipes that are gentle and free from harsh chemicals.

  • Diaper cream: This helps prevent and soothe diaper rash. Choose creams that are free from fragrances and other irritants.

  • Changing pad: This provides a soft and comfortable surface for diaper changes, and helps protect your furniture from messes.

3. Feeding

  • Bottles: If you're bottle-feeding, you'll need several bottles in various sizes. Choose bottles with slow-flow nipples to prevent your baby from choking.

  • Nipples: Choose nipples that are the right size and shape for your baby's mouth.

  • Breast pump: If you're breastfeeding, a breast pump can be helpful for pumping and storing milk.

  • Nursing pads: These help absorb any leaks or drips when breastfeeding.

  • Sterilizing equipment: It's important to sterilize bottles and other feeding equipment to prevent infections.

  • Formula: If you're formula-feeding, you'll need to stock up on the right formula for your baby.

4. Nursery

  • Crib or bassinet: Your baby will need a safe and comfortable place to sleep. Choose a crib or bassinet that meets safety standards and is appropriate for your baby's age and size.

  • Sheets: Have several sets of fitted sheets on hand for easy changing.

  • Mattress pad: This helps protect the mattress from leaks and spills.

  • Sound machine: This can help soothe your baby to sleep by creating a calming environment.

5. Bathing and hygiene

  • Baby bathtub: Choose a bathtub that's safe, comfortable, and appropriate for your baby's size.

  • Washcloths: Soft and gentle washcloths are essential for bathing your baby's delicate skin.

  • Baby soap: Choose a soap that's gentle and free from harsh chemicals.

  • Brush and comb: These are essential for grooming your baby's hair and scalp.

  • Nail clippers: It's important to keep your baby's nails short to prevent them from scratching themselves.

  • Towels: Choose soft and absorbent towels to dry your baby after bathing.

6. On-the-go

  • Car seat: This is essential for transporting your baby safely in a vehicle.

  • Stroller: Choose a stroller that's safe, comfortable, and appropriate for your baby's size and age.
